Preface

Funsutra of a Ruined MBA degree is a Blog that narrates story of F.R.I.E.N.D.S.H.I.P., Love and Life based in a B - school in a university Campus. It is an attempt to bring Campus life to Blog Pages. As the name of the Blog suggests, it will not be giving you any insights into MBA but a glimpse about life inside University gates in an average B - School (strictly not from the upper crust). I chose to narrate this story from Rahul’s eyes, the main character lead, who is an unambitious drifter and lands up in this B - School for fun, frolic, friendship, love and off course the MBA degree! The only reasons that he chose MBA is that one, it is in fashion (soon can be announced as India’s National Degree) and second, in hope that it will land up in a job, paying good BUCKS... Statutory Warning - This blog will not guide you anything related to MBA, getting good grades or Placements, however it can teach you how to screw up your MBA . Read at your own Risk!

HOSTEL LIFE | University Hostels | Fun, Frustrations,Restrictions Hostel Life | HPU Hostels

Chemistry of MBA Campus life (or that matter of any other professional degree) is always incomplete without its hostel life. Hostel life is a beautiful compound made up of numerous elements named Fun, Frustrations, Pain and Pleasures. For detailed research on this Compound let my mind take you back on a ride to University Hostels at HSV.
It was the first week of August; the day seemed beautiful, little cold and foggy like a typical day during monsoons in Shimla, but thank God it was not raining. I was visiting this place for the very first time with plenty of imaginations in my mind. Didn’t knew exactly how the place is going to be, but as per university Prospectus and my imagination it couldn’t have been less than a paradise.
HSV Campus had 7 boys’ hostels and 6 girl’s hostels with an intake capacity of 1500+ students (not including illegal residents). Although the hostels are located on beautiful hills with green dense forests all around but the sad part was that boys and girls hostels were situated far apart from each other on different sides of hills. Due to this there wasn’t any possible chance of bird watching. It gave me  a feeling of living in “Purush Aashram” on leeward side with “Mahila Aashram” on the windward side. Additionally, Boys were not allowed inside girls' hostel and mess and vice versa.

Just in case you are interested in knowing names of our hostels, they are called as such -   Shri Ram Hostel, Buddha House, Mahatma Gandhi Hostel, so on and so forth. There are generally two types of rooms that are allocated to MBA’s – triple sharing in first year and single occupancy in second year. Before I invite you to my room and introduce you to my 2 room-mates and the other neighbors, let me introduce you to life at university hostels through this dialogue between University Prospectus and Reality.

University Prospectus- : A hostel is a home away from home. Aware of the special needs and requirements of students, who come from far-flung places to this great centre of learning, the University tries to provide them a safe, secure and affordable accommodation.
Reality -: Indeed it is a home away from home and the university is aware of the special needs of students. When it comes to safety and security the Hostel Campus is really very safe and secure. It can be considered as the hub of various political parties present in the campus who share a relation nothing less than what cats and dogs do. The place is as volatile as the India –Pakistan border and has had a history of bloodletting fights. When it comes to affordability the place is far more than value for money, affordable for all.

University Hostel - The University Hostels provide its students with a neat and clean environment and a comfortable place to live in.
Reality – The exact words that describes neat and clean environment here would be filthy, dusty, messy, scrappy and all other synonyms that you can think of. From the first look it looks like a smelly government hospital that you would only like to visit in case of grave emergency.
Fresh smell of dirty toilets will wake you up from the dreamland. No matter how many notices were put for toilet etiquette, there are always people who act like prisoners of mental asylum. Poor guys who are addicted to cleanliness usually collapse into misery whenever they see corridors packed with litter - alcohol bottles, broken cigarettes and food left over’s.

University Prospectus - For your assistance there are Wardens and attendants on duty round the clock.
Reality – Don’t know what university Prospectus means by the word “Round of Clock”. I did not see any warden on duty even for a single day (except during clearances) during my 730 days tenure in the campus. Anyways “this” is one of the best things about HSV’s hostels.

University Prospectus - Each hostel has its own mess which is run on co-operative basis by the boarders, and provides delicious balanced diet at reasonable rates.
Reality – yes each hostel had its own mess which is run on co-operative basis but without any Co-operation.
Like other hostels across the globe, food is neither delicious nor balanced (no finger licking stuff). Sometimes it becomes completely unbearable with students starving and dreaming for the delicious cuisines of the world. People like me who have always been blessed with mom – made food will really have a bad time. To our rescue we had two alternatives, No.1 was the greatest inventions of humankind ever - Maggi Noodles. The second one was Babu Rao Bhaiya’s Hostel Canteen famous for its “World’s Best Band Omelette and Band Samosa”- desi versions of fast food, far better and super affordable in comparison to the burger and pizza giants!
When both the alternatives failed, we used to raid each other’s rooms usually after 11'o clock to find something to eat.

University Prospectus- Architecturally, the hostels are aesthetically laid out with plenty of open space. The rooms are comfortable, spacious, fitted with lights and all essential furniture.
Reality – Architecturally boy’s hostels are an architect’s nightmare. In Comparison girls hostels are more imaginatively built, whereas the hostels for boys are dark, prison-like dungeons with a narrow passage running across small rooms.

University Prospectus - For your cultural and social development Colorful evenings of song and dance, talent shows, dramatics are organized from time to time. Inmates of a hostels are encouraged to live in harmony, like one big family, lending each other a helping hand whenever, mutually cooperating to make hostel life a rich and fruitful experience.

Reality -: As far as I can remember, yes girl’s hostels have these activities. In boys hostels there are only political meetings, dadagiri, political fights and booze parties. Whether you like it or not you HAD to attend some of these stupid meetings and listen to idiotic political ideologies that only believed in the ultimate British policy of divide and rule. It not only divides our big family but also ruins something known as “harmony”.

Fun-sutra of an Amusing Hostel Life

As per my point of view hostel life is just like an Ice-cream. You have to enjoy it before it melts. Two years in the HSV hostels was the Platinum period of our lives, pleasant memories of this place always leaves “Us” wet in the rains  of nostalgia.

(Us = me + Baba Ji + Hemant + Nick +Abhinav + many others)

To start with ,the first biggest pleasure that University hostels  provide is absolute freedom from all the never ending questions and suggestions that poor day scholars need to face from their parents every day. Here are some best examples…
“where are you going?” “With whom are you going….?”
“What time will you come back…?”
“Itni der kaha laga di…..?.”
“Ye bhi koi time hai ghar aane ka….? dus (10 ) baj rahe hai…”
“ek ghantte se phone pe chipka hue hai… Do you have a girl friend ? “

And bountiful of suggestions like -:

“His/her Company is not good, keep away from him/her”

“Don’t make any Programs without permission !”
“We don’t have money for your wandering habits.”
 “Don’t drive fast…..”
“Don’t drink and smoke..”

“Come on time……”

“Concentrate on studies and studies and studies…”

“ Learn something from Mr.Sharma’s (or verma, kapoor, Mehta, etc) son/daughter. Pata hai, he/ she has cracked IIM/IIT/AIIMS …”

In addition to relief from these questions, we were also offered with numerous other unproductive amusements and charms like our -:

·        Never ending cock-tail parties (sometimes we used to drink till sunrise, with all variants of alcohol.) The study table meant for books was always packed with beer, vodka, wine, whiskey bottles and snacks, since a good MBA should always have good wine-ing and dining skills.

·        Watching movies all night, be it hollywood, bollywood, tollywood, kollywood (some with subtitles of course). Hero, heroine, naach gana hona chahiye bas ! ( Even Sachin Tendulkar can’t beat our this record )

·        Bunking Classes (like owls we slept during day and stayed up at nights).

·        Card games (I began as a novice and I ended up as ‘the’ Master blaster).

·        Full utilization of low night tariffs!(apply only to few lucky bastards )

·        Spending money that doesn’t belong to you and vice versa.

·        Baba ji’s spirituality Classes.(only for a chosen few)

·        Mimicking Faculty and others.

·        Weird Philosophies (e.g.- kuch kam nai hai toh….kisi aur ka time/kaam barbaad karna)

·        Video Gaming (special competitions of counter strike, aoe and nfs)

·        Crazy Birthday Suprises (BEWARE ..!!! woh Sabse dard aur taqleef wla din hota hai…ouch!)

·        Weird photographs, videos and facebook status’

·        One night stand with Xeroxed notes (on the day before examination)

·        Fighting for Buckets and bathroom availability (As H2O is always in short in supply in HSV and comes with fixed timings)

·        2 years of laughing, crying, sharing, caring and learning the lessons of life in a new way with each passing day.

To cut the long story short here is a copied status from someone’s facebook wall which explains everything so well-:

“Hostel Life is the best time of your life. When else are your parents going to spend several lakhs a year just for you to go to a strange town and have the time of your life?”

Before I end this saga and introduce you to my roommates in the next episode, here are some of the popular sayings ( kuch mashoor dialogue ) of HSV hostels.

1. Class ka time kya hai? oye uth sale ********* 5 minute reh gaye!!
2. Abe saale Cigarette hai???
3. Market chalna hai?
4. Yaar abhi bhi 4 chapters baki hain.
5. Chai peene chale?? Paronthe khane chale??
 6. Bike nikal bhai, Gedi mar ke aate hai.
 7. Aaj Mall chalte hai.
8. Ghar kab ja rha hai?? Wapis kab aayega??
9. Party karte hai? Contri nikal.
10. “Paani khatam hogaya.” ….. “saale daru ke liye kuch to chhod deta!!!”
11. Yaar koi  nayi movie padi hai??
12. Campus chalein....mahol acha ha
13. Assignment ki copy de
14. Aaj maggi/chai kon bnae ga???  - “abe oye aalsi ****** … uth…Teri Bari hai..”

and some famous one’s after Booz party…
1.Bhai hai tu mera
2.Yeh mat samajh ki main pi kar bol rha hu.
3.Mai teri dil se ijjat karta hu.
4.Tu bol bhai kya chahiye tere liye jaan bhi hazir hai
5.Kash wo mil jati to aaj ye hath me na hoti.

And undoubtedly the best one

HOSTEL LIFE | Room Share | Room Mates | University Hostel

Episode6 RooM S8-Buddha Hostel,HSV

I was allotted room number S8 in Buddha Hostel, just 50 steps away from the main gate. It was a triple sharing accommodation ( 3 beds room ) which means that I had to share it with 2 more people from IBS. On first thought, sharing a smelly hostel room with two complete strangers didn’t seem like a very good idea. But, as they say, beggars are not choosers and getting a good apartment would be too heavy for my pocket money check, so there I was – at the door step of room number S8. From the first look, the corridor and the room gave me a very haunted feeling.

With a little uneasiness, I opened the door and peeked in. I saw a messy room with 3 beds and a study table. There were 6 young men in the room, 5 of them were sitting quietly listening carefully to the sixth one who was doing all the talking. The topic of their discussion appeared to be political.  Mr. Brain asked, “yar room to 2 logon k sath share karna tha… ye 6 kahan se aa gaye… hai kaun ye sab?” Before it could wander more, the guy who appeared to be the leader immediately stood up to say hello to me. He was about 6 feet in height, weighed approximately 90Kg’s, had a fair complexion and the most striking feature that I noticed in him was his energy level. He already had all details about me like my name, roll no. etc.

His was a personality that you don’t see too often. He was just a day old in the hostel and everybody on the floor was already acquainted to him. Apparently, even our seniors who were residing in the hostel had started calling him “Harsh Bhai”. This was my first meeting with Harsh… who is the very famous and our very own… Baba ji ! Baba ji, then introduced me to my second roomie, Hemant.

Now let me give you a little background info about Harsh alias Harshen Bhatia. Just like the meaning of his name, he is the little god of happiness. He was an Ayurvedic doctor, a 28 years old Virgin trying his luck in MBA.
Unlike others he was not pursuing MBA for placement; he had come to IBS just to continue his long lasting affair with books and to save himself from Marriage and Family Business (Apple Orchards in UK (upper kotkhai)).
He was always thirsty for Knowledge and loved to gain Knowledge from each and every source on planet. Liquor in any form was his favourite. Approximately 98% of Books and 80% of alcohol bottles in our room belonged to him.

He was our own Munnabhai cum Baba Ramdev at campus who loved spreading awareness about health, wealth and spirituality. During our two years of MBA he was our free source to wisdom of universe. He was a sort of “Glue” or a chemical bond who had the ability to bind the elements of our divided class (divided on basis of political alignment, day-scholars v. hostellers, this city v. that city, etc) with an explosive reactivity. He was always on with a mission to heal the Wounded World, like Mother Teresa's true heir. No matter what problem you have, he always had a solution. His great philosophies helped me and numerous others to cruise through all the difficult situations during those two years.

Time to introduce you to my second room-mate Hemant Sharma.
His and my relationship was very “co-incident”! Coincidentally he was the first guy whom I met in the class the first day and coincidently we gelled instantly, coincidentally we share same taste (like liking girls). Coincidentally he was my roommate and coincidentally we became best friends over the course of time. Our friendship was as strong as “fevicol ka jod” and like “DA VINCI CODE” we both shared dozens of secrets. His parents named him Hemant Sharma although we use to call him Hemu. He was the guy who brought life to every event, a package of positive aura. He was Warm, outgoing, attentive, easy-going and an active participator in whatever it may be (sports, dance, music, daru…KUCH BHI KARVA Lo IssSe)… Let him gulp down a few shots of liquor, and he would transform into the best standup comedian on the planet and would make you laugh, laugh and laugh till you die with pain in your abdomen.

Beside this he considered himself as a born athlete. During his school he had played cricket, soccer, baseball, basketball, hockey, kho kho and the rest. You just name the game and you will discover that he had played that game and has a cupboard full of trophies, folders full of certificates and memories. His mantra for life was “chill maar”.

Now let me take you to Room no. S9, to introduce you to my neighbors – three more idiots !!!

Define sexy girl | Love Triangle | Casanova | Hostel

EPISODE 7-RooM no. S9, Buddha Hostel

Meet my first neighbor who considers himself as the most happening “dude” not only in IBS, but also HSV. His name is Ghanshyam Chakarvarty also known as kacha and sarkari. This guy was more mysterious than any girl on earth. He was secretive about almost everything. He still drove a 1990 model of Hamara Bajaj. When not bragging about his skills, qualities and medieval philosophies, he used to share his own fake epic stories in superlative degree (In shudh hindi it is known as "Atishyokti Alankar "

He always had a helping hand for girls and was world renowned in IBS for his mad crush on Abhilasha Singh Thakur one of our fellow classmates.
BTW, Abhilasha… she was the youngest of four children in a divided house. She was popular because she was a bombshell. She looked as hot as a super model and her most significant achievement in life was that once she had walked the ramp for some unknown fashion show. She was a cynosure of our every MBA party with matchless dancing and drinking abilities. She looks like a Barbie and smokes like a Marley and smiles like a Charlie. Gosh! She was seriously sexy in her black mini skirt with matching black pencil heels, which were surely enough for men like Ghanshyam to have a multi-colored orgasm.

If we look beyond her looks (although we never did), this girl was always upset and angry and was a carrier of stress for others. Statistically speaking in IBS she just had one friend and one infatuation. Ghanshyam was the friend, whom she used for multiple purposes like assignments, proxies, guy who gets her phone recharged and sometimes getting her feet massaged. Poor guy was really madly in love with the lovely princess who was falling in love with Ghanshyam’s Roommate.

Before I introduce you to Ghanshyam’s  Roomate, let me  show you  a famous Brand survey  for a Brand of which Ghanshyam  is the most loyal customer.

Survey - :

Which shaving cream do you use?
Ghanshyam: Nik's

 Which aftershave do you use?
 Ghanshyam : Nik's

 Which deodorant do you use?
Ghanshyam : Nik's

Which toothpaste do you use?
Ghanshyam : Nik's

Which shampoo do you use?
Ghanshyam : Nik's
And so on….

wondering why you haven’t heard of this brand ?
‘cos  Nik is neither an International nor a domestic Brand, Nik is Ghanshyam’s roommate and Abhilasha’s crush.

Nik was a rich, carefree, happy-go-lucky  gen - Y Hunk. He was the spoiled son of rich businessman with a very strong Political Background. He was the supreme bachelor of our batch, when it came to women and alcohol he had no boundaries.  His life was a pursuit for sex, romance and love from different sources. For him being in love was the very essence of being alive. He just believe in dating dames but never thought of relationships, as then they become dull, routine, boring , full of expectations  and possessive over time .

He was a free spirit, rules were never meant for him. They say DONT DRINK N DRIVE, yet he would reach hostel safely every night in his shimmering red Honda City (Top Version). They say U CANT ESCAPE TRUE LOVE yet here he was falling in love every other week and always walking away safe. His Philosophy is simple “Don’t make mistakes, just date them”

Girls and Nik

To girls he was the Prince Charming. Around 6 feet tall, narrow waist, a V-shaped torso, broad shoulders, fair skin and a Honda City were his charms. Add to that his personality, dress sense, high Confidence levels; and here we have – Nik - Every guy’s envy and every girl’s dream.
To girls (including the beautiful ones with tonnes of attitude) even his flaws appeared cute and quirky. Statistically speaking every girl in our batch adored him and at least 50 percent of them had a crush with the biggest known crush of Abhilasha singh Thakur.  It was a sort of triangle… sarkari crazy for Abhilasha, Abhilasha for Nik and Nik for… no one! Before this love triangle got more complicated, I also have to introduce you to Vivek, my neighbor number 3 residing in Room No. S9.

Sorry he is an unavailable at the moment; let’s catch him in the class of Advance Study  in the next episode…
