EPISODE-11 - In Search of OTHER-WORLDLY CREATURES....
Ghosts and hills go together like peas with carrots. Shimla, the Queen of Hills, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, too has a healthy population of other-worldly creatures, especially British Ghosts. Most of these stories date back to pre-independence era when Shimla was the summer capital of British Ruled India. One can always find some local with a ghost story or an encounter with the supernatural beings, the stories being passed from elderly and encounters (well, obviously) based on their own experiences. To us (Hemant, Vivek, Nick and me) they were passed from Baba ji.
According to Baba ji’s Book of Knowledge, one of the most famous story is that of an invisible horse rider who makes some rounds to and fro on the road from Sanjauli to the medical college (IGMC) without harming anyone though. The rider is invisible but his presence is felt by the sound of hooves that numerous people have heard. Then there is the famous Chudail of Boileauganj. She is not of a very friendly nature towards her once fellow “humans” but of a more evil variety. Her Modus-operandi includes stopping her prey mid-way in the dark hours of night and asking if she can walk along. Then there is this harmless phantom rickshaw-puller who moves around market and ice skating rink at night. Apart from the ghosts of commoners, there are ghosts who belong to scholarly class too. Yes, there are some ghosts who have so much longing for good education that they’ve made some prominent institutes of education their permanent Alma-Mater. The well-known Bishop Cotton School Alumni have the story of a ghost who likes working alone in the chemistry laboratory at late nights. The girls from St. Bede’s college have a story about mysterious sounds that come from their dining hall, just about midnight everyday. Also, there are bountiful of haunted houses like Rothney Castle at Jakhu (a mansion reportedly frequented by a white ghost) and roads, for instance Lover’s Lane. I guess by now you must be wondering what have ghosts to do with MBA? Wait, Coz there was a day when we encountered one.
It was a cold rainy night of Shimla, all of us (nick, baba ji, hemant, vivek, sarkari and I) were sitting in our hostel room and that day the topic of our discussion was Ghost stories. Like always Baba ji was the in-charge of most of the story-telling. His stories were scary enough to make Sarkari pee in his pants. So without wasting any time he helped himself to the other room. For Nick, baba ji’s stories and experiences with Ghosts is nothing more than fake epics and had nothing to do with reality. Hemant was also in baba’s team and had a firm belief in supernatural powers. Vivek and I were in the zone of confusion, heart wanted to believe baba, mind rubbished the claims. There were assignments to be made, presentations to be prepared but our minds were lost in the questions- Do Ghosts Really Exist? Are Ghost real or not ? bla bla The topic was hot and our curious souls needed an answer. Although I would have preferred Google but Nick wanted to experience it personally for evidence and baba ji can die but never lose any argument. Soon the argument turned into a bet. The clock was striking 12:30 am, when heavily drunk baba and nick decided to venture into the wild and explore a haunted house in the vicinity where no one even dared to go in the daylight. So there we were, the four musketeers, all set for a spooky experience (BTW, No one asked for mine’s and vivek opinions on the adventure) -: )-: ).
